Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough or white bread
  • 4 oz deli ham
  • 4 oz Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for spreading)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour until smooth. Gradually add the milk while whisking continuously until thickened. Stir in nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  3. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Layer ham and cheese on the unbuttered side of two slices, then drizzle with béchamel sauce before topping with the remaining slices (buttered side out).
  4. Place sandwiches on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Allow to cool slightly before slicing in half and serving warm.
