  • 1 tsp anise seeds
  • Optional: Pearl sugar or slivered almonds for topping

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt; create a well in the center.
  3. Add melted butter, eggs, orange zest, anise seeds, and the yeast mixture into the well. Mix until combined.
  4. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into three pieces; braid them together.
  7. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and let rise for another hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with toppings if desired.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
